Bethel defeated by Pomperaug: Oct. 2
October 5, 2010
The (1-1)Bethel Wildcats took on the (1-1)Pomperaug Panthers in a SWC showdown on Saturday, Oct. 2. Bethel was just coming off a thrilling win against rival Newtown and Pomperaug was coming off a crushing loss to Masuk.
The Panthers jumped out to an early lead after scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter and two touchdowns in the second before Bethel Quarterback Brendon Schmidt scored on a three-yard run.
The only offense from either team in the 3rd quarter came from Pomperaug’s defense returning a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
Bethel held Pomperaug to no points in the 4th quarter while Schmidt scored for the second time on a 10-yard run. Brian Birdsell was then able to convert the two point conversion making the final score of the game Bethel: 14 , Pomperaug: 35.
Even though the scoreboard may not show it, the Wildcats beat the Panthers in many statistical categories. Bethel ran more total plays, had better third down efficiency , 3 times as many rushing yards, more yards per pass play, less penalties and had a longer time of ball possession.
So far the Wildcats have lost, won, and lost to start the season. Hopefully they will keep the pattern going vs. Notre Dame this week.
