This week marks the start of BHS fall sports teams competitions!

The underclassmen shined as the boys and girls cross country teams had their first official meet of the season on the Mark Goodwin Cross Country course at BHS. The two teams ran against Brookfield, New Fairfield, and Pomperaug (headed by former girls cross country coach and BHS athletic director, Mr. Goodwin, whom the course is named after).

The boys lost to all three schools 48-15, despite a strong performance from Ryan Polistena ’17, who ran a 19:49 in his first-ever high school cross country race, and finishing 16th overall and 1st for Bethel.

The rest of the varsity boys runners placed as follows: Matt Marx ’17, 33rd, Chris Caldara ’14, 38th, Patrick Daly ’16, 40th, Kevin Sholtes ’16, 42nd, Brian Carraturo ’17, 47th, and Chris Joyce ’17, 49th.

The girls beat Brookfield with a score of 15-49, but lost to New Fairfield and Pomperaug by a score of 32-25 and 45-15 respectively. The girls were lead by Julia Fragomeli ’16, who ran a 23:46 and finishing in 10th place overall, and Gwen Gallagher ’16, who ran a 23:56 to place 11th overall.

Savannah Pipkin ’15, Victoria Maceira ’14, Sarah Mello ’17, Kilwienny Gomes ’14, Romana Pilepich ’14, and Evalin Brautigam ’14 rounded out the girls varsity squad with places of 12th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 19th, and 20th respectively.
