Football Gets First Victory in Home Opener

Football (1-2) had the team’s first home game of the season Friday night. The stands were filled as Bethel came to support the Wildcats as they battled the New Fairfield Rebels.The team did not disappoint, winning 48-14 over the Rebels, a team who the Wildcats lost 13-48 last year.

Bethel started the game out and established their rushing game early on against New Fairfield. The Wildcats scored running three touchdowns in the first half, going into halftime with a comfortable 21-0 lead. That did not stop Bethel, as they scored two touchdowns in each of the two remaining quarters, and all but one were rushing touchdowns. New Fairfield scored a touchdown in both the third and the fourth quarters.

The Wildcats were lead by Zachary Farrell ‘14, who had 240 rushing yards and three of Bethel’s seven touchdowns behind the team’s strong offensive line. Quarterback Joey Piatnik ‘14 had 179 rushing yards, and a touchdown on both the ground and the air. James Giannone ‘14 had a 37 yard touchdown reception from Piatnik, while Kenny Samuelson ‘15 and Nick Silva ‘14 each added a running touchdown. Kicker Thomas Lempereur ‘17 completed an impressive 6/7 successful extra points in his first Varsity game after stepping up for injured kicker Hayden Duffy ‘15. On the defense, Andre Hayles ‘14 had an interception.

The team’s next game is 10/4 in Southbury against Pomperaug.
