Fall Sports Mid-Season Roundup

October 24, 2014
The 2014-2015 School year is well underway, and many of Bethel’s Fall Sports Team’s seasons are coming to a close. Bethel is lucky to have many fantastic student-athletes representing the Wildcats across a large variety of sports. Here is how some of those seasons have gone for BHS:
Football:
Record: 3-0
Captains: Brendan MacIntyre, Jared Wilsey & Ben Cleary
As the little brother of one of Bethel’s strongest players the past couple of years, Jared Piatnik ‘16 certainly had big shoes to fill as quarterback. It is easy to say that Piatnik is not having trouble meeting these expectations, he is instead exceeding them in every game game he plays. Piatnik has been almost unstoppable both on the ground and in the air. However, Piatnik is not the only player who opposing teams have had trouble containing on offense: RJ Moravsky ‘15, Will Daniels ‘16, and Brad Haggerty ‘16 are just some of the members of this dynamic offense package for the Wildcats. The defense has been stepping up and making huge plays to support the powerhouse offense. If this combination of spectacular plays on both sides of the ball continues, Bethel Football is looking at a very promising season.
Boys Cross Country:
Record: 4-5
Captains: Kevin Michalka, Jack Fritch, & Patrick Hannagan
The still very young Boys Cross Country team looks to bounce back after a disappointing season last year under veteran coach Mr. Waring. The team has seen some success in the very difficult SWC conference, including an exciting upset of Immaculate in the first half of the season. The varsity pack looks to keep improving their times to finish the season strong, while Kevin Michalka ‘15 focuses on cementing his place as one of the top runners in the conference.
Girls Cross Country:
Record: 6-3
Captains: Savannah Pipkin & Nikki Shaner-Bradford
The Girls Cross Country team has been having immense success this year behind the spectacular performances of many of their front runners. Savannah Pipkin ‘15 has been nothing short of amazing in her many races this season, and has been supported with excellent times from Gwen Gallagher ‘16, Julia Fragomeli ‘16, and Sarah Mello ‘17. It looks like the Lady Wildcats are on the course to make quite the splash in the league and state conference meets.
Boys Soccer:
Record: 2-3-1
Captains: Steven Filippakos, Christian Osorio, & Mike McCourt
The Bethel Boys’ Soccer team is filled with talented players and is looking to have an outstanding season. The team has a fantastic group of seniors with the experience and skill to carry the team through the very difficult schedule. The team started a little rocky with some disappointing losses, but that does not mean it is time to count the Wildcats out from the playoffs. If the team keeps focusing on winning games it will be a very exciting season.
Girls Soccer:
Record: 4-3-0
Captains: Lauren Bradshaw & Jackie Fernandez
The Girls’ Soccer team is filled with young talent, with many of the best players from last season returning and hungry for wins. Very similar to last year’s team, this year’s Lady Wildcats are hoping to fill their schedule with wins. The potential is there for this team to have a very successful year, thanks to the higher level of experience over past seasons. If all the girls can play their best, Bethel can count on strong representation in the postseason from this team.
Field Hockey:
Record: 7-1-0
Captains: Eloise Gagnon, Jessica Bergen, & Maddy Kroot
The athletes on Bethel’s Girls Field Hockey team have been putting in spectacular efforts so far this season, evident by their awesome record. The team has consistently been a strong program for Bethel and this year is no different. Morgan Matthews ‘16, a goal-scoring machine for the Lady Wildcats, cannot stress how excited she is for this season, as it is “the best season so far out of my three years of playing.” Matthews also added how last year’s team was the first in a couple years to reach the state championship tournament and that this year, they are going again!
Volleyball:
Record: 2-3
Captains: Elizabeth Galliford, Elizabeth Garrison, & Brett Bohrman
Bethel’s Volleyball team is looking to have another good season despite the graduation of some very strong players were critical in the team’s past success. The year hasn’t started out as strong as the team hoped, but the girls have recovered from some early losses and will hopefully keep pushing forward with wins as the year progresses.
Girls Swimming and Diving:
Record: 1-5
Captains: Rachael Lanuto
This year marks the first time Bethel has a Fall Girls’ Swim Team! The team, composed of athletes from both Bethel High and Immaculate, is looking to keep improving in its first year as it faces very competitive schools. Bethel is represented by Rachael Lanuto ‘16, Allee Feuerman ‘16, and Michelle Morgan ’18.
Go Wildcats!
