The cold chill in the air can only mean one thing- the winter sports season is almost here.

Bethel High School offers boys and girls basketball, boy and girls indoor track, boys swim, boys ice hockey and wrestling.

Tryouts for girls basketball were held on November 29.  Ice hockey and wrestling also started the same day. Boys basketball tryouts will be held on Thursday, Dec. 2, as well as indoor track and boys swim. If you plan on playing a winter sport, make sure you are registered on FamilyID and have paid the pay-to-play fee.

Varsity girls indoor track distance runner, Rachael Turek ‘23, explained how they are preparing for their season.

“Each group has been working very hard preparing and conditioning for the upcoming season. The team has many goals they hope to accomplish this year. We also have a large team this year with many new underclassmen and we are excited to see what they can bring to the team,” Turek explained.

The first indoor track meet will be held on January 5.

The boys swimming team swims at the Brookfield YMCA.

“I have a hopeful outlook this season since we have a large team with many new underclassmen recruits,” said Ryan Tenezaca ‘23. He said they are hoping to have more upperclassmen joining. Their first match is away at Canterbury on December 21.

Varsity boys basketball player, Nate Salvino ‘23, said the team is working and training to get back on track for a good season after a tough season last year. Salvino has a positive attitude and believes the team can do well. The first home game for the boys is on December 29.

Varsity girls basketball player, Camryn Quinn ‘23, said she is very excited for the upcoming season and has high hopes for the girls. Quinn explained they have been training every day in the gym and working specifically on their shots to prepare. The first home game for the girls is on December 17 against Amistad.

After winning SWCs last season, Varsity ice hockey player, Jordan Perrotti ‘23 believes the team will have another great season.

“The league this year looks to be competitive. We are looking forward to the 5 a.m. practice,” Perrotti said.

The boys hockey team is a co-op with Brookfield and Danbury. Their home ice rink is the Danbury Ice Arena and their first home game is on December 21.
